Data Visualization

Course Overview

In the midst of today's overwhelming data landscape, visualizations offer clarity and insight. This course is designed to equip students with the skills to tell effective and truthful stories with data. Starting with the fundamentals of data manipulation in spreadsheets, students will learn how to transform data into understandable visualizations. They will delve into the realm of charts, learning to discern between impactful visualizations and those that may mislead. Then, drawing from disciplines such as graphic design, visual art, and cognitive science, students will create their own compelling and informative visualizations. Students will also learn about bias and misleading statistics and what questions to ask when consuming data.

Prerequisite: There are no prerequisites in computer science, math, or statistics for this course, students with backgrounds in these areas will undoubtedly find opportunities to leverage their expertise.

Students in GOA courses will need reliable access to a computer with webcam/microphone connections, an email address (preferably school-based), a Web-conferencing app (GOA courses use Zoom), and a Word processing app (GOA courses use Google’s G Suite). When necessary, alternative arrangements may be made. Some courses require additional materials which can be found here.
